Sing Your Song

Does your music help express who you are, or does it define who you are?

When I say “music” I mean anything in your life: hobbies, posters, collections, clothing.

I walked past a Harley Davidson shop today and saw a five year old decked out in Harley Davidson clothing. Why? Granted Harleys are extreemly cool, but I'm sure this kid didn't know that: He was only 5 years old, so clearly his parents were making him a modle for their obsession with stuff . . . a stuffsession.

We use our things to define who we are when we haven’t developed an understanding of our authentic identity.

We surround ourselves with stuff that we think others will like. We hope they will look at our poster collection and say to themselves, "Oh, Doug's quirky because he collects pictures of soda cans."

That garbage isn't attractive. Talent is attractive. Talent is authentic. Talent is free. Everybody has talent.

Talent comes from God, so explore what God has given you rather than wasting time and money on material junk. Can you sing, write, tell jokes, dance? Are you gifted with a compassionate heart? Are you effortlessly good at art, science, making friends? If so, then explore that and use it to glorify him. Spend some time meditating on what God has given you and you will discover something more attractive than anything you can buy. You will discover the authentic you that God made.

“Sing a new song to the Lord”, don’t buy another CD.
